Goldman retained in California

The California Exposition &
State Fair today announced it will retain Ronald Goldman as
Racing Secretary for its upcoming 26-day State Fair Harness
Racing meet, which commences on August 6.
Goldman is a racing industry veteran with nearly 40 years of
experience in the field. Most recently he served as Racing
Official for Capitol Racing in Sacramento.
In his new role, Goldman will be responsible for the
day-to-day operations of the racing office including
planning for the upcoming State Fair Harness Racing meet.
"We are extremely pleased to have Ron on board as a team
member," said David Elliott, Cal-Expo Director of Racing.
"Ron’s enthusiasm and his experience in the Harness Racing
industry as a racing official will be instrumental to the
success of the State Fair Harness Racing meet for the
horsemen, the Fair, and the fans."
In March, the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) approved
a landmark proposal by Cal-Expo to operate Harness Racing
during the 2005 California State Fair. To accommodate that,
the CHRB reallocated the historical State Fair Thoroughbred
and Mixed Breed racing dates to Bay Meadows. The one-year
experiment allows Cal-Expo to be the location to host
Harness races continuously throughout 2005, providing
continued employment and racing for the Harness industry
while eliminating competing Thoroughbred racing days in
Northern California.
"Our hope is that this experiment increases the health and
well being of all breeds, which would be beneficial for the
entire racing industry," Elliott said.
The State Fair Harness meet begins August 6 and ends
September 17 with 26 racing programs. Cal-Expo organizers
are proposing a daily post time of 5:35 p.m. each day during
the State Fair with the exception of a Special Labor Day
card on September 5 when the proposed post time will be in
the early afternoon. The Sacramento Harness Benevolent
Association will assume control of the meet beginning on
September 23 through December 31, 2005.
The California State Fair runs from August 12–September 5,
2005. For more information, media may contact Erica Manuel
