California extends
drug phase-in periods
Wednesday,
July 27, 2005 - from the California
Horse Racing Board
The California Horse Racing Board, in a
recent memo, has advised licensed horsemen and veterinarians
of an important change:
Changes to CHRB rule 1844 and 1845 dealing with permitted
levels of nonsteroidal inflammatory medications and bleeder
medications went into effect May 27, 2005, and horsemen and
veterinarians were notified of these changes prior to the
implementation date and were also advised that there would
be a 60-day "phase-in" period penalties for violations of
the new regulatory levels for flunixin and ketoprofen (CHRB
1844), so that veterinarians and trainers could adjust their
administration protocols.
The phase-in period for penalties for violations of the new
regulatory levels for flunixin and ketoprofen (CHRB 1844)
that was scheduled to end July 26, 2005, has been extended
and will now end September 27, 2005.
During the extended phase-in period, trainers will receive a
warning when flunixin blood levels exceed 20 ng/ml, but are
not greater than 500 ng/ml, or when ketoprofen blood levels
exceed 10 ng/ml, but are not greater than 50 ng/ml.
Flunixin blood levels greater than 500 ng/ml or ketoprofen
blood levels greater that 50 ng/ml will continue to be
violations during this time period.
