Since early December when the Board of Directors of the California Exposition & State Fair -- our current landlord and operator of the harness race meet at Cal Expo – voted to no longer operate harness racing at the conclusion of the current race meet, many questions have been raised about the future of our racing program at Cal Expo. As frustrating as it is, the answers to our many questions have been slow in coming and at times it seems that there is no progress being made. With this in mind, we wanted to inform our horsemen of four important meetings that are scheduled for the coming week – February 21st thru 24th.
On Tuesday, February 21st, representatives of CHHA will be meeting with the management of Cal Expo to discuss the following items:  (1) an update on potential operators for the upcoming Fall harness meet at Cal Expo; (2) a reconciliation of the Horsemen’s Purse Account and other monies due horsemen as per the Multiyear Horsemen Agreement with Cal Expo; (3) a discussion of two vs. three nights of racing per week; (4) the continued use of Promo Fund monies to provide incentives to recruit additional race horses; and (5) managing the “Summer Break”.
On Thursday, February 23rd, the California Horse Racing Board will be meeting at Santa Anita for its regular monthly meeting. The Board will be discussing and acting on Cal Expo’s request to amend its current license in order to reduce the number of live harness race dates (from 3 to 2 per week) for the remainder of the current race meet. CHHA has raised concerns about this issue and will also be addressing Cal Expo’s failure to meet certain provisions of the Horsemen’s Agreement. This meeting is open to the public.
On Friday, February 24th, the Racing Committee of the California Exposition and State Fair will be meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the Cal Expo Admin Office to discuss matters pertaining to harness racing at Cal Expo. It is expected that there will be a staff report on the status of parties interested in leasing the facility for harness racing at Cal Expo. This meeting is open to the public.
Finally, on Friday, February 24th at 11:00 a.m. CHHA will have an open meeting for all horsemen outside of our office trailer at Cal Expo to talk about what has taken place during the week at all three of the above meetings and to answer questions raised by our horsemen. All of our horsemen are urged to attend this important informational meeting.
