BB Bug, Archie Make For Memorable Night At Cal Expo
Thursday, April 5, 2012 - by Mark Ratzky, Publicity -- Cal Expo

Wendi Wiener is over the moon when one of her horses wins, so use your imagination as both of her starters ended up in the Cal Expo winner’s circle last Friday night (March 30) for trainer and co-owner Nathalie Tremblay.

“I was speechless,” Wendi related. “That never happens.”

Wendi’s homebred 6-year-old pride and joy mare Bewareofthisaffair accounted for the seventh race on the card with Lemoyne “Mooney” Svendsen at the controls in a lifetime-best 1:55.3 clocking, while Arch Nemeses prevailed in the 13th event on the evening with Steve Wiseman giving directions.

Bewareofthisaffair’s tally was bittersweet, as her dam Sanananna passed away two weeks earlier.  “Having BB Bug (Bewareofthisaffair) win is very important, as we lost her mom on March 14,” Weiner informed.  “She was just about to turn 19 and much more than a broodmare to us.  It was almost like she was out there with BB Bug and helping give a little closure to a very difficult time.

“It was also a new lifetime mark for her, and I want to thank Mooney for use of the Tweety yellow bike.  It was an amazing race and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

It was a bit later on Friday evening that the Wiener/Tremblay combination teamed up with the Artsplace gelding Arch Nemeses and he clicked in game fashion.

“Archie found himself again,” his co-owner explained.  “He’s had lots of bad luck in his races lately, but he was no taking no prisoners this time.  Thank you Steve!”

As far as Nathalie is concerned, Wendi made it clear this is much more than an owner/trainer relationship.

“I consider the horses to be my kids, and Nat takes care of each one of them like they are the best.  She’s also a wonderful person and it seems like we’ve been friends forever.

“This may be a business, but there is a lot more to it than just the racing.  The horses know when they are loved and they give back 100% when that happens.  Trained perfect and loved perfect go hand in hand.  I also want to recognize the great help Nat has with Dave Kuri, John (Stretch) Hagan and Chuck Johnson at the barn.”

Franks Best Gets Friday Marquee Treatment At Cal Expo

Franks Best, who has accounted for three of the last four clashes at the top rung, looks to add another victory to the resume in Friday night’s (April 6) $4,500 Winners-over Trot at Cal Expo.

A 5-year-old son of Armbro Scribe and the American Winner mare Inside Edition, Franks Best is owned, trained and was bred by Bob Johnson, with Lemoyne Svendsen again in the sulky.

The bay performer comes into this assignment with $128,000 in his account and a 1:57 mark that was established here last season.  He will be attempting a hat trick here having used his strong late kick to capture the last two top dances for the trotting division.

Sent off at 8-5 in his March 9 outing, Franks Best rode live cover to the lane and then motored past the pacesetter for a length and a quarter tally.  In his most recent tour as the 4-5 chalk, the Johnson representative was first-over into Putoneonnetformom on the final bend, gained the advantage at the midway point in the stretch and was once again a length and a quarter to the good at the wire.

Rocky Stidham will send out the uncoupled pair of Shelby County, who will have his trainer in the sulky; and Putoneonnetformom with James Kennedy  at the controls.  Rounding out the field are Meringue with Luke Plano and Giles L S Hanover, who leaves from the one-hole with Steve Wiseman in the bike.

Live racing resumes at Cal Expo on Friday (April 6) & Saturday (April 7) at 6:00 p.m. (PST).  On every live card, Cal Expo offers free parking & free admission after 4:30 p.m.   On Friday, Cal Expo offers Happy Hour from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on which Beer; Well Drinks & Wine are offered at $4 each, while a Burger with fries is offered at $5.

Cal Expo currently offers a reduced 15 percent takeout rate on all Pick 4’s.  Additionally, all Late Pick 4’s now come with an increased $20,000-guaranteed gross pool.  Also, the Friday Late Pick 4 will offer a 0% takeout on all winning wagers made on track or at Twinspires.com, while the Saturday Late Pick 4 will be broadcast on TVG.
